Haynes Motor Museum 11.3.25
We had a wonderful day visiting the motor museum in Sparkford today. We were greeted by members of the education team who looked after us brilliantly all day. We learnt about the history of the different ways we can travel, starting with walking by foot and dragging sledges to horse drawn carts. We saw that when wheels were first invented it made it so much easier to move and carry heavy things, as wheels can roll. We then saw how the engine was introduced and the evolution of motorised vehicles to the cars we use today.
We went on exciting tours around the museum in small groups before gathering back together for our lunch. After lunch and a play in the amazing play area we came back to the classroom to learn more about the assembly line system that was perfected by Henry Ford. We used small construction pieces to build our own cars within assembly lines; learning about how by working as a team we could 'manufacture' cars more quickly and efficiently. We learnt some new names for different parts of the car, first connecting the chassis to the body of the car. Then adding the wheels, which spin on an axle. Then a roof, bumper and spoiler. Very impressive car building everyone!
What an exciting day learning lots of new and interesting facts about the history of the motor car. We hope this trip has inspired the children to ask questions and help them to think more deeply about the cars and vehicles we use today.
A positive, purposeful and enthusiastic atmosphere
