Forest School Session 3
Wed 12 Jul 2017We had another great Forest School session yesterday - even in the pouring rain! The Year Fours were all very positive and enjoyed learning about food chains and mini beasts. We were going to have our first fire but the weather unfortunately prevented us from doing this! We were joined by Mrs Seymour this week who also took the opportunity to find out how Transfer Day went at DMS.

Forest School Session 2
Tue 04 Jul 2017In today's Forest School session the Year 4s listened to the story 'The Great Kapok Tree' a story about a Kapok tree in the rainforest which is going to be chopped down until all the creatures which live in/on the tree and a local child come along and tell the man what the tree does for their survival. It is a wonderful story with lovely illustrations and a very special message. This story led to many great discussions about food chains, deforestation and facts about animals. The Year 4s had some great contributions and we spent a long time on this one activity! After the story the children could choose from many activities including leaf identification, bug hunting, leaf and tree rubbings and a few children were able to try 'Hapazone' a Japanese craft where you print leaves using their natural dye onto cotton by squeezing it through using a mallet! They found this tiring but worth it! We also played a fun game to help teach us about fire circle safety ready for next week's session where we hope to light our first fire! We ended the session by reflecting on our Forest School session by 'snowballing' our thoughts - we wrote our reflections on paper, scrunched them up and threw them across our circle for our friends to read aloud. Lots of lovely reflections again - we are all looking forward to next week's session on Tuesday. -
School Council's Send My Friend to School Campaign
Fri 30 Jun 2017Our Abbey Class School Councillors set off this morning on a big bus to St. Osmund's School in Dorchester. They joined the rest of the schools in DASP and got their banners ready to march to the town centre where they got people to sign a petition to support the campaign for all children, around the world to go to school and have an education. After that they went to the Corn Exchange where they met Oliver Letwin. All the schools presented a presentation/speech to Mr Letwin and then had the opportunity to ask him one question.
Mrs Cain felt extremely proud of her school councillors, they were incredibly confident and passionate about their campaign! Well done Max, Amabelle, Ella and Sam!

Forest School
Thu 29 Jun 2017Year 4 had their first Forest School session today! They all enjoyed the session and feedback at the end was all very positive! In today's session we discussed suitable clothing for the forest, played a game around the fire circle to help us prepare for being safe around the fire, had hot chocolate around the fire circle, found leaves around the Forest School site and began to learn how to identify them as well as making rubbings of them with foil! It was a very busy session and felt like it went very quickly! We made a group agreement of how we all want to behave and be treated in the Forest School environment, identifying some risks and deciding how we can manage these risks. The Year 4s were brilliant at this and were very excited to agree to this group agreement as they got to sign it with a muddy fingerprint! It was a wonderful first session and we are all looking forward to our next session on Tuesday afternoon. Another huge thank you to FOCUS for raising the funds to enable us to do it!
A positive, purposeful and enthusiastic atmosphere
