Love of Reading Week 09.01.14

This week we have all enjoyed lots of fun and exciting activities related to reading. We started the week by celebrating the children’s Winter Poems which they had chosen and written over the Christmas holidays as part of our ROAR (Raising Our Attainment in Reading) challenge. Thank you to parents for helping with the ROAR challenge. Another big thank you to parents for joining us at the end of the school day to share your children’s Book Time stories.  It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying their stories together. During the day we did shared reading in mixed groups across the school and also read the story ‘Lost and Found’ which we used as a stimulus for learning.
On Tuesday we all dressed up as our favourite book characters and enjoyed activities such as sharing our favourite books amongst our friends (mixed age-groups), writing descriptions of our favourite book characters and drama activities through Story Sacks. Thank you to parents for all your help with the costumes – they were all fabulous!

On Wednesday we had a very exciting visitor; a storyteller who came in and told us the story of Rapunzel. Giant Class were mesmerised! They loved listening to his story and they then went on to write some amazing words to describe how the characters in the story felt. Lots of super describing words were used and learnt. We enjoyed two more stories from Chris the Storyteller which the children loved as well.
Today, we have been enjoying lots of activities related to Julia Donaldson’s stories with a main focus on the story ‘Room on the Broom’. We all read the story together and then all designed our own broomsticks for characters from Julia Donaldson’s stories. We had an underwater broomstick for the characters in Tiddler, a broomstick for the Gruffalo and many from the Room on the Broom! Tomorrow we will be learning lots about the story of the Gruffalo.

A positive, purposeful and enthusiastic atmosphere
